Course Descriptions


Ballet is the building block for all other dance disciplines. All students in our ballet program are encouraged to participate in any and all ballet performances offered. Performing is an integral part of your training and growth as a dancer and artist. We also encourage participation in our summer dance programs to promote consistency and continued progress towards the upcoming year. Proper dress code is required in all ballet classes.

 
Creative Dance
Goal: This class for 3 and 4 year olds is an introduction to dance that explores creative movement, levels, shapes, tempos, rhythms and develops coordination and locomotive skills. Props and stories are used to engage young children and to make dance class a fun and active learning environment. This class will present a studio performance in lieu of Spring Concert.
 
Prerequisites: Students must be able to participate in class without parental presence and should be cooperative in a group situation. Three year olds must be evaluated in a class prior to registration. 
 
Dress Code: Leotard and footless tights, NO SHOES!
 
Class Schedule: Tuesday 1:00, Thursday 4:30  (45 minute class)
 
Rhythm and Movement
Goal: This class for 4 and 5 year olds offers pre-dance instruction including exercises in balance, movement, rhythm, coordination and creativity. Children will begin to learn the structure of a dance class including warm-up, stretching, taking turns across the floor, learning basic steps and creative movement. The class also develops loco motor skills such as skipping and galloping in addition to basic ballet positions and movements. Stories and props are used to engage young children. Listening skills are encouraged.
 
Prerequisites: Students must be five years old or have completed a year of Children’s Dance.

Class Schedule: Tuesday 3:30 (45 minute class)
 
Pre-Ballet
Goal: This is a primary course which allows 5 - 7 year olds to move into any form of dance. Rudimentary ballet positions are taught along with floor exercises to promote flexibility and strength. Simple steps, arm movements, and correct posture are incorporated along with musicality and rhythm. It is in this pre-ballet class that students begin to learn the basic French ballet vocabulary. Each class will begin with a warm-up and proceed to loco motor skills, center work and creative exercises. 
 
Prerequisite: 5 year olds must have studied one year of Rhythm & Movement at FSPA or be evaluated and recommended for Pre-Ballet by FSPA instructor.

Introduction to Ballet
Goal: This class serves as a transitional class from Pre-Ballet to Ballet I. Students ages 6 - 8 begin a wider study of ballet vocabulary with a greater focus on correct posture and placement. The importance of concentration, self- control, and discipline are emphasized and necessary for the progression to Ballet I. Basic steps are performed in the center, across the floor, and in simple pathways. A waltz rhythm is introduced.
 
Prerequisites: Completion of Rhythm and Movement and Pre-Ballet programs.

Ballet I
Goal: This program offers 7 - 9 year olds the opportunity to begin an earnest study of classical ballet. Barre work is introduced with a strong focus on individual turnout and foot development. Awareness of bodyline and form is enhanced by the use of the barre exercises and correct technique is stressed as the students’ confidence and self-assurance are developed. Simple port de bra and adagio work is added to the center exercises, aimed at improving balance and artistry.
 
Prerequisites: A minimum of one year in a pre-dance program. The child’s capacity to receive constructive criticism is important and a more mature attention span is necessary.

Class Schedule: Friday 4:30
 
Ballet IA
Goal: Ballet IA is an advanced Ballet I class serving as a bridge to Ballet II. The curriculum continues to reinforce correct placement, turnout, and proper use of the feet as the technique builds and becomes more challenging. 
 
Prerequisites: Completion of Ballet I or by evaluation

Class Schedule: Monday 4:30; Thursday 5:30; Required 2x/week.
 
Ballet II
Placement in this class depends upon each student’s ability and individual progress. Correct technique, including turnout, foot development and leg extensions will be carefully evaluated and emphasized. The curriculum calls for more complex center and diagonal floor exercises, as well as increased control and placement.
 
Acceptance into the class is by teacher evaluation.

Class Schedule: Monday 5:30; Friday 3:30; (90 minutes) Required 2x/week.
 
Ballet IIA
Placement in this class is by evaluation of technical skill. Ballet IIA is a bridge to Ballet III and begins the transition from beginner to intermediate work. More advanced adagio work and epaulement will be presented. A strong understanding of vocabulary is necessary along with a good sense of musicality. This class will also prepare and evaluate students and their potential to go on pointe.
 
Acceptance into this level is by teacher evaluation.

Class Schedule: Monday 7:00; Friday 5:00;(90 minutes)  Required 2x/week.
 
Ballet III and Pointe I
Goal: Ballet III is a 2-year program intended for the serious minded student. Acceptance at this level is based on a combination of physical maturity, self-control and mastery of the concepts that are given in our Ballet I through Ballet IIA curriculum. This class consists of a 90-minute technique class and a mandatory 30-minute pointe or pre-pointe class. Each student will be carefully evaluated before acceptance onto pointe. When proper placement, strength and technical ability have been achieved, pointe will be an option. Attendance is strictly enforced and required three times a week. Summer ballet is also a requirement before entering Ballet III. Guidance will be available for the proper fit of pointe shoes and care of feet. The first year of pointe is done at the ballet barre. 
 
Acceptance in the class is by teacher evaluation. Required 3x a week. (90 min technique class/ 30 min. pointe or pre-point)

Class Schedule: Monday 7:00-9:00; Wednesday 6:30-8:30; Saturday 9:00-11:00
 
Ballet IV and Pointe II
Goal: Ballet IV and Pointe II is the beginning of advanced technique and center pointe work. More difficult curriculum is introduced including multiple pirouettes, complicated allegro combinations, and greater attention to lines and epaulment. Progress on pointe will be carefully monitored and depends on each student’s individual ability and strength. Attendance three times a week is required at this level. The third class is offered as a combined class with Level V on Saturdays to challenge and encourage more dancing. Ballet IV must be taken in conjunction with Pointe II. These classes are required 3x/week including  Ballet IV/V.
 
Prerequisites: An audition is required.

Class Schedule: Monday 5:00 and Friday 5:00 (90 minute class plus 30 minute pointe class)
 
Ballet IV/V
Goal: The combined level IV/V ballet class on Saturdays is an advanced ballet lesson only open to our Level IV/V ballet students. This class provides our dancers with a company class atmosphere and encourages an extra day of dancing per week. The class will consist of demanding and complex combinations, multiple pirouettes, and extra beats in allegro. Level IV students will be challenged with new technique and Level V students will have the opportunity to excel and be leaders in the class. While promoting movement and versatility, it will teach our dancers to apply their daily training in a fast paced environment.
 
Prerequisites: Students must currently be enrolled in either Ballet IV or Ballet V for the 2010-2011 school year.

Ballet V and Pointe III
Goal: Ballet V and Pointe III offers intense training for the advanced dancer in technique and pointe work. The curriculum includes difficult adagio work, multiple pirouettes, complicated allegro with beats, and greater attention to artistry and performance qualities. We will continue to work and achieve proper lines of the legs and feet, along with flexibility and strength while executing the appropriate steps for this level. Advanced students are encouraged to participate in all performance opportunities as part of their training. Attendance is required 4x/week, including Ballet IV/V.
 
Prerequisites: An audition is required.

Class Schedule: Monday 3:00; Wednesday 4:30; Friday 3:00; (90 minute plus a 30-minute pointe class)
 
Ballet Level A
Goal: This class offers 9-11 year olds with no prior experience the opportunity to begin an earnest study of classical ballet. Barre work is introduced, along with center stretches and exercises for the development of flexibility and proper foot placement and strength. Awareness of posture is emphasized with correct technique as the students’ confidence and self-assurance is developed. Simple port de bra and center work is added for improving balance and artistry. Required once a week. (60 min)

Class Schedule: Thursday 6:30 (no experience necessary)
 
Ballet Level B
Goal: This classis for students ages 9-ll with at least 1year experience in Level A or Ballet I. The curriculum continues to reinforce correct placement, turnout, and proper use of the feet as the technique builds and continues to be more challenging. Required once a week. (60 min)

Class Schedule: Friday 4:30 (previous ballet experience required)
 
Ballet Level C
Goal:  This class is for beginner ballet students (12+) who are new to ballet or have had limited ballet experience. Students learn, review, and attempt to master the basic skills needed, such as turnout, placement, correct posture, flexibility, and basic ballet terminology. Performing in Spring Concert will depend on progress of the participating students and class size. Required once a week. (60 min)

Ballet Level D
Goal: This level was created to accommodate our ballet students ages 12+ that have mastered beginner ballet and are ready for more challenging technique. New and more complex exercises will be introduced at the barre, in the center, and across the floor. We will continue to develop strength and flexibility while progressing the technique and following the curriculum. Prior ballet experience is required and teacher evaluation is mandatory. Attendance is required once a week. (60 min)

Class Schedule: Thursday 7:30; Friday 7:30; (90 minutes)
Required once a week/recommended twice a week.
 
Ballet Level E
Goal: This class is an intermediate ballet class for students who have had prior ballet experience and training. Ballet technique is strengthened and refined, as the tempos and complexity of the combinations are increased. Vocabulary and performance skills will continue to be developed. This is an appropriate class for students wanting to progress their study of ballet but with time restraints. Acceptance into the class is by teacher evaluation. Attendance is required once a week. (90 min)

Ballet Level F
Goal: This class was created to accommodate our ballet students who have mastered intermediate ballet and are ready for more challenging technique. The curriculum at this level requires proper use of terminology, epaulment, correct lines and execution of steps. Attention to port de bra and a greater development of artistry will also be emphasized. Acceptance into the class is by teacher evaluation. Attendance is required once a week. (90 min)

Ballet Level G
Goal:  This class is designed to challenge the advanced ballet student and progress their knowledge and ability to dance. Strong technique, placement, and ballet terminology is required. A greater emphasis on movement and more complicated tempos and combinations will be executed. Acceptance into the class is by teacher evaluation.

Class Schedule: Wednesday 4:30; Saturday 12:30 (90 minutes) Required 2x/week.

 

Ballet Level H
Goal: Ballet H is for our advanced ballet students who wish to continue their serious study of ballet technique while focusing more attention on artistry and performance qualities. Proper knowledge of port de bras, lines of the body, epaulment, and ballet terminology is required for this class. Pirouettes, petite allegro, musicality and the ability to understand and retain more complicated combinations will be emphasized. Attendance is crucial to each student’s progress and will be monitored closely. Acceptance into this class is by teacher evaluation only.
